7 Common Signage Mistakes to Avoid

Signs are everywhere in our lives. They line the streets, hang from storefronts, and posted on doors. Signs help us with directions, inform us of prices or specials at restaurants, provide warnings for hazards ahead--you name it! However, some common signage mistakes can be costly and confusing. This article will discuss five of them to help you make sure your signage is effective.


Mistake #1: Too Much Text

It's important to keep your sign design simple. Too much text can be overwhelming to read quickly, which leads to a bad user experience. Limit your text to a maximum of 5 or 6 words per line, and try not to have more than 2-3 lines on your sign.


Mistake #2: Wrong Typeface for the Design

Not all fonts are right for signs. Especially if you want your sign's message to stand out, you need to pick a font that matches the style of your sign and communicates what it needs to.


Mistake #3: Wrong Color Combination

Don't just pick two colors at random for your signage. Make sure that your colors fit the design and help convey the message. If you're designing a Halloween sign, for instance, orange and black is a better choice than green and brown.


Mistake #4: Missing Information

Remember to include all necessary information on your signs. This includes prices or other promotional offers, hours of operation, disclaimers, and contact information.


Mistake #5: Incorrect Spacing and Alignment

When designing a sign, make sure that the letters and words are evenly spaced. It's also important to use correct punctuation and center your design on the sign. And remember--a centered design doesn't mean centering each line of text individually! The whole design should be centered for it to look balanced.


Mistake #6: Wrong Placement

If you've designed a sign, make sure that it's placed in an area where it can be read. It should be readable both from a distance and up close. Also, avoid placing your signs above eye level--people will miss them if they're too high.


Mistake #7: Unclear Message

The whole point of signage is to communicate, so make sure it does just that. Avoid vague wording and be as clear and specific as possible. This may mean that you need to simplify your message.
